How an NPR editor, and his daughter Ramona, turned a work fail into a win

How an NPR editor, and his daughter Ramona, turned a work fail into a winHow an NPR editor, and his daughter Ramona, turned a work fail into a winThere are many horror stories of employees airing personal opinions on their employers public social media accounts. There are executives publicly tweeting about private acquisitions and companies with social media handles that arelive-tweeting mass firings. No employer is immune, notlage even those at the highest levels of power. A Justice Department staffer in charge of the government agencys official Twitter handle once posted a tweet calling out CNN for being the biggest troll of them all lmao. The U.S. government then had to issue a press statement that the tweet was intended for a personal account and that the staffer had had their access revoked.A recent story, however, ends happilyOn Monday, NPR editor Christopher Dean Hopkins accidentally used NPRs Facebook account to tell the media organizations audience about his baby Ramonas adv entures.Hopkins quickly issued an apology, but by then the people were clamoring for more. Baby Ramona became Ramona. There was even a Change.org petitionwith more than 800 signatures to give the NPR staffer in charge of this moment of errant serendipity a raise. NPR later clarified in a story of their own that Ramona was in fact a baby, not a cat, as some had assumed.Ramona is a reminder for employees to always, always double-check what which social media account youre using before posting. You may not have the good fortune, as Hopkins had, to share a heartwarming story about a baby who loves cats.

7 jobs that will pay you to travel around the world

7 jobs that will pay you to travel around the world 7 jobs that will pay you to travel around the world Many people say they love traveling but struggle in finding a sustainable way to do it. Due to those demanding 9-5 job commitments, they may only get the chance to travel on a foreign holiday once or twice a year; then it’s likely time sensitive, dictated by factors like annual leave or affordability. You need money to do all you might want to do, after all. But what if there were ways to travel while earning at the same time?Well, there are, and some are more unique than you might think. Here are 7 jobs that will pay you to travel the world:1. Work on a Cruise ShipCruises  are genuinely regarded as a time of rest and recuperation; therefore they may not come immediately to mind as a place you’d like to work. However, a cruise is also a vessel to every continent of the world (even Antarctica is becoming an increasingly popular choice among travelers!). Furthermore, the options for work are vast. Whether your strengths are in retail, cooking, hosting, dancing, as a waiter or barte nder, there is a range of opportunities on board a cruise ship, not least of which is the chance to travel the world’s oceans.2. Become a Tour GuideIf you’re passionate about working on the ground and enjoy learning about other cultures,  a tour guide position  may be perfect for you. Of course, wherever you choose, a minimum requirement for this would be that you could actually see yourself living there for a decent period of time. For that reason it’s recommended that you only consider tour guiding after already living in a certain place for a little while; not only will this help you decide whether you like it but you’ll pick up key facts and knowledge about the location along the way. Being a quick learner and good at public speaking are also great attributes for a successful tour guide to have.3. BartendingIf you’re preparing for tour guiding or another long-term travel goal but need something to help you get by in the meantime, serving drinks in a bar is as good an o ption as any. You get to share stories with the locals and may even pick up some of their quirky mannerisms along the way. This is the kind of job you can find almost anywhere, even in smaller towns, and one that you don’t need any qualifications for. Obviously, you’ll need to be good with people, though if you’re passionate about traveling you probably love meeting new people anyway.4. Truck DrivingNot everyone is a ‘people person’ of course; you may be more of an introvert, cut out for a job that involves long periods working alone. In that case driving a truck cross country might be ideal. This is another in-demand role that you’ll be able to pick up anywhere providing you have the correct driving license requirements. Truck driving to some will seem dull but it is a seriously great way to enjoy the environment of any country; it’s only through driving long-distance that you truly appreciate the scale of the land you’re traveling.5. Charity WorkIf you care about p eople and countries that are less well off, there are numerous charities that will offer you the opportunity to travel in exchange for hands-on work on the ground. Obviously, this is a somewhat less glamorous option that probably won’t pay as well as you might like, but the important thing is that you’d be doing something you care about, seeing the world and helping others along the way. Many people find that charity work gives them experiences they’ll remember for a lifetime.6. Teach English as a Foreign LanguageAnother way you can feel like you’re doing something to help others is becoming a TEFL teacher. This is a highly in-demand role due to English being such a popular global language. It’s not a difficult role to get into either. You don’t necessarily need to know the local language in most cases, though picking up a few words alongside a little cultural knowledge is nonetheless always helpful. You will need a TEFL certification, but there are plenty of  TEFL train ing programs you can take  without too much trouble. Plus, there are few jobs more rewarding in general than teaching.7. Travel BloggingQuite literally one of the jobs you can do traveling is travel blogging. To start making proper money from this you’ll need a decent amount of followers and social media knowledge to promote your material, as well as some writing skill, an eye for photography if you want to have more of a photo-based blog, or video production skills if you’d prefer video blogging. Even if this doesn’t turn out to be financially viable long-term, it could still be  a great hobby  that helps document your travel experiences to look back on later. These are just some ideas for jobs that will pay you to travel the world, but there are endless possibilities out there for those wanting to craft their own experiences. Use these as your catalyst to discover your own unique path across the world. This article first appeared on YourCoffeeBreak.

Busyness and the lack of margin in our lives

Busyness and the lack of margin in our lives Busyness and the lack of margin in our lives One of the most common maladies in the 21st century is living lives that feel stressed and chronically overwhelmed. We are busy, tired, and we feel stretched â€" there always seems to be more to do than we have time or energy. When demands appear to be greater than our resources, the result in our lives is stress. We feel stressed in different areas of life: time, physical and emotional energy, relational demands and finances. Stress then displays itself in our lives in a variety of ways: irritability, anxiety, not eating well, poor sleep habits, not exercising regularly, making hasty (and usually, poor) decisions.A number of years ago, Dr. Richard Swenson wrote a wonderful book entitled, “Margin: Restoring Emotional, Physical, Financial, and Time Reserves to Overloaded Lives” where he convincingly demonstrates how not leaving extra space in our lives (with our time, energy and finances) creates significant, but predictable stress for us.The concept of “margin” is based on the premise that it is wise to leave space in our lives to deal with the unexpected or unplanned events that may arise. This is in contrast with our tendency to pack our schedule full, or (as some people frame it) to “make the most of our time.”Just in case you need an example, in daily life, let me cite a couple:Working full days, plus filling the evenings with meetings or activities (kids’ sports, etc.), and then having a full schedule of activities for the weekend. Repeat this pattern over several weeks until you either become exhausted or sick. Stretching the budget to buy a little nicer house, in a neighborhood with good schools; stretching things a bit further to have the kids in private school or in numerous sports and lessons; and then “splurging a bit” to spring for that nice vacation that you really can’t afford but “the kids are only young once.” The problem is â€" life is interrupted by the unexpected. If we plan and schedule our days, weeks and lives with no room for the unexpected, then the stress in our lives dramatically escalates when the unexpected occurs. So what types of things often occur in daily life that we haven’t learned to expect? traffic jam on the way to an important appointment the printer breaks down before a critical presentation one of your children gets sick a major client calls with a problem. Other common needs for margin (but less daily and more seasonal): getting sick, having an auto accident, or the car breaks down family events: illness, death, accidents technology breakdowns â€" computer/pad, phone, website weather â€" travel delays, flooding, blizzards, tornadoes, hurricanes global national events: terrorism, war, economic meltdowns. The likelihood of one or more of these events happening in the near future is actually fairly high (although we cannot predict which ones specifically). Interestingly, there are also positive events in our lives that place demands on our resources and suck up our margin: weddings, births, graduations, moving, professional opportunities. So it is not always negative events that create stress in our lives. The Results of Living Without MarginWhat happens when we continue to live in a manner that doesn’t leave room for the unexpected? Pretty obvious results, actually: increased stress, irritability, tension, poor communication, relational conflict, being chronically late, missing important events, not being adequately prepared for meetings, poor quality work, frustration and anger, guilt, loss of sleep, depression. Why Do We Do It?If we have a fairly good idea that there will be unexpected events in our lives that will take additional time, energy and money to deal with, why don’t we allow for them? I think there are different reasons for different people (or at different times in our lives). The following isn’t an exhaustive list, but is a start: Unrealistic expectations about life. Believing that life will continue to go on as it has, without disruption. Being fearful and anxious about the future, which drives a frenetic pace to do as much as you can today (the “you can never save enough” syndrome). A pleasure and stimulation seeking approach to life â€" some people live for excitement and adrenaline. They also often have an inability to enjoy inactivity, peace, or just to “rest”. Survival. Although this is not true for most of us, there are people who have to work long hours (both for money and at home) just to provide for themselves and their families. Other negative driving factors in our lives: workaholism, greed, excessive desire for achievement. How Do We Start to Change (and Live a More Sane Life?)Change starts with awareness and acceptance of a problem. If we don’t think how we are living creates problems for us, our family or our business, then we won’t change. So it might be wise to start with an honest appraisal. Take a look at your life and see if the occurrence of “unexpected events” are fairly common in your life â€" and create stress because you don’t allow space in your life to deal with them.Next, pull out your calendar for the next week and month. Are there any unscheduled blocks of time (during the workday, evenings, weekends) or is your calendar already packed? In what arenas of your life do you tend to live “close to the edge”? With your time? Finances? Physical and emotional energy? Take stock of the beliefs that push you to live without margin. Develop a plan to explore and correct the distortions you have.Remember, we were not designed to live life under constant, unrelenting pressure. Take a deep breath. Look around you and identify something that is beautiful. Take a walk and enjoy the outdoors. Pause and give thanks for the good things in your life. And put some time in your schedule to do nothing!Recently, in the closing session of the Recognition Professionals International conference, I talked about  busyness  and how it is one of the major threats to healthy workplaces today.   For more information about reducing busyness in the workplace, see my book  The Vibrant Workplace, where I devote a whole chapter to the issue. This article was originally published on Appreciation at Work.

2 Phrases Currently Sabotaging Your Resume

2 Phrases Currently Sabotaging Your Resume 2 Phrases Currently Sabotaging Your Resume If you're looking for an easy way to make sure your resume is up to par, look no further. A quick scan for the following two phrases will tell you everything you need to know. But before we get to that, let's quickly agree on one key point: A resume is not about what you can do, what you're supposed to do or what you should do, given your professional title. It's about what you have done â€" concrete examples of your career achievements. Most resumes outline specific employment information and then provide a list of three to five bullet point statements for each position held. These bullets are the real meat of the document. They tell people what you did, how you did it and the impact your actions had. Unfortunately, I see a lot of bad practices in this area. The two phrases below are key indicators that your resume might be working against you. When I see these phrases, I can guess that the resume in hand will be one of two things: a bland restatement of a job description or a generic list of skills that the writer may or may not possess. In either case, these phrases are warnings that revision is probably needed. Take a peek and then check your resume. If needed, take some time to rework your bullet points. 1. "Responsible for…" This phrase is a neon sign that tells the reader you're listing job duties and not accomplishments. For example, consider this resume bullet point: "Responsible for completing monthly inventory audits." Reading this bullet point, few recruiters or hiring managers would be impressed. In fact, it might have them scratching their heads. You were responsible for it, but did you actually do it? Instead of focusing on the task, why not focus on how you did that task in an exceptional way and achieved something special for the organization? Perhaps your audits revealed inaccuracies in the tracking systems, for which you were then able to recommend improvements. Maybe you identified some kind of fraud or recognized a problem with over-purchasing. It's also possible that you never encountered any abnormalities at all, and the best you can do is point to your record of timely completion and meticulous attention to detail. That's okay, too. Include it. Just rephrase the sentence and start it with a powerful action verb. 2. "Ability to…" This phrase suggests that you can do something but it doesn't actually say you've done it. It's a broad statement that points to a skill but offers no tangible proof. For example, consider the following resume bullet point: "Ability to gain consensus and work well in collaborative environments." It sounds lovely but is essentially meaningless. How does the person reading the resume know this is true? He doesn't. You're asking the reader to take a leap and just trust you. Instead, why not articulate a specific time in which you actually did gain consensus? Or mention a project in which you successfully collaborated with a team. Even better, see if you can identify a specific result that came of that experience â€" something that positively impacted the organization in some way. Reword the sentence so it starts with a powerful action verb and provides evidence for the skill you claim to have. If you can't cite a specific instance in which you successfully used the skill, it's not something that belongs in the bullet point statements on your resume. Remember that when revising a resume, the vast majority of your time should be spent on making those bullet point statements really pop. It takes time and effort, but the payoff is well worth it. Remove these two phrases and you'll be one step closer.

Why You Shouldnt Wait for the Perfect Candidate

Why You Shouldnt Wait for the Perfect Candidate Why You Shouldnt Wait for the Perfect Candidate As a road warrior, one of the benefits of my job is hearing from tech leaders across the U.S. It enables me to get a really good picture of the unique technology climate for businesses in many markets, as well as observe the common tech themes appearing in most areas of the country, regardless of industry or company size. Managing projects in an environment with more work than qualified candidates is one of the common challenges that plagues IT leaders. While employment trends constantly ebb and flow, the need for technical professionals continues to be a bright spot in our economy. Technology brings innovation, competitive advantage, productivity gains and improved customer service, but those benefits can be fully realized only when you have the IT pros to deliver the projects. Hiring? We can help you find the right technology professionals for your team. Don’t wait to hire the perfect candidate for a job Many managers make it harder on themselves and their teams when they interview for an open position - then hold off on hiring a really talented person, choosing instead to wait for an idealized candidate. They’re looking for the one who checks every single box for a particular job: One who has the latest technology experience, brings the perfect blend of technical and soft skills, and fits within their allocated salary range. The problem with this approach is that the person might not ever come along, leaving tech positions open for prolonged periods of time. There is certainly a lot to be said for being thorough and patient to prevent a hiring mistake. However, there are many ways to accelerate your process while reducing the issues associated with a prolonged candidate search. Don’t compound the problem. An unnecessarily long job search takes a toll on your team if they’re required to pick up the slack while a needed role remains open. The increased workload leads to employee stress and burnout, and that potentially leads to employee turnover, which only exacerbates hiring challenges. Don’t wait for a flawless candidate. When you interview qualified people but continue to search for that perfect one, you risk making great candidates lose interest in the role. Even worse, they may talk about your slow, frustrating hiring process to other technology professionals in their network - and dissuade others from even applying to your company. The tech community is still pretty small, and news spreads quickly. Simplify your hiring process. Look for ways to streamline your hiring methods. Eliminate unnecessary steps, and commit to moving quickly when you find a candidate who can be successful in the job. Conducting proper due diligence in the candidate evaluation process is important, but frankly you won’t really know what type of employee you have until they are in the role. I have personally had candidates who knocked it out of the park in an interview but turned out to be mediocre performers, while others who were potentially a stretch for the role turned out to be terrific hires. Know your needs vs. wants. Revisit your job description and summarize the critical skills for the job vs. the nice-to-haves. Focus on those candidates who bring the critical skills to the role, and consider the rest icing on the cake. Remember, if they have the basic skills to be successful in the position, an investment in training and mentoring can be the answer to building their skills over time. We all want great employees who bring the best skills to the table. As a manager, you’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with, so it’s understandable to want to keep looking for the ideal candidate to join your team. However, an overly cautious search for that “unicorn” employee can create a needlessly long process, as well as stress for you and your staff. Streamlining your hiring process, creating a manageable list of required job skills and moving quickly when you find someone who can perform the job tasks are steps to successfully get that job filled. And you’ll be one step closer to delivering the projects on your to-do list.

Folding Microscopes from Frugal Science

Folding Microscopes from Frugal Science Folding Microscopes from Frugal Science Microscopes are a basic tool of doctors and scientists of every discipline. They are ubiquitous in laboratories around the world. But all microscopes are not alike, varying in cost and complexity, and a team of researchers discovered that in places where they might be needed the most, the tool is never used, either from complexity or lack of training. So they developed a folding microscope, made from paper and based on the concepts of origami, at a cost of about 50 cents. Manu Prakash, an assistant professor of bioengineering at Stanford University, and his team of graduate students, developed Foldscope to get low-cost serviceable equipment in the hands of front-line health care providers in developing countries. Now, they are also trying to put the scope in the hands of elementary school children around the globe. Prakash just completed the first phase of the 10,000 Microscopes project, in accepting proposals from 10,000 people around the globe with wide-ranging ideas of how they could use the tool. The team plans to provide every one with a Foldscope to pursue their project. In the field in India and Thailand, I saw donated research microscopes just sitting there, covered with mold or something, he says. They had no way to maintain them, and the annual salary [of a health-care provider] times ten is still more than the cost of the tool. We need to build tools to deploy in a much larger context. Foldscopes cost just 50 cents to make, and can be assembled in 20 minutes. Image: Foldscope Origami Prakash runs a laboratory at Stanford, and challenged his students to devise alternatives. He lectured on the physics behind microscopes and folding, and credits graduate student James Cybulski with refining the idea. There are a lot mechanics is how this is built, he says. By the act of human folding, you can get a really precise optical alignment, out of origami. The kit can be folded and constructed in about 20 minutes. There are not any moving parts, and it packs flat. The components are printed on A4 paper, perforated and color-coded. There is no instruction sheet either. It is extremely ruggedPrakash has thrown one out of a three-story buildingand can be incinerated after use to destroy any potential pathogens. But to keep costs down, the design depends on low-cost spherical lenses rather than precision-ground lenses used in research or other microscopes. The goal is to make it easy for the user for a diagnostic perspective, says Prakash. Theres usually a lot bells and whistles that front-line workers are not able use. Prakash says one of the thrusts of his lab is development of what he calls frugal science, and the development of cheaper tools and scaling up for manufacturing. Another project is building tools that are disease specific. Pathogens can be magnified to 2,000x with a Foldscope. Image: Foldscope Instruction To use a Foldscope, a sample is put on a microscope slide and wedged between two slats, or paper layers of the microscope. Using a thumb and forefinger to grasp each end of the paper strip, the user puts an eye to the micro lens and focuses by sliding and flexing the strip. The tool can reach magnifications of 2,000x, Prakash says. Using a watch battery to power different LED lights, the Foldscope also can be configured to target specific organisms related to a disease. Prakash says the tools initial promise is in detecting diseases that include malaria, African sleeping sickness, schistosomiasis and Chagas. The scope also can be modified for bright-field, multiflourescence or projection microscopy. There are many different types of microscopes, he says. A microscope is a mechanism with precisely made components that need to come together. Folding was the mechanism to do that without three-dimensional parts. Diverse Ideas Prakash has been working with small grants from the Centers for Global Health and the Gates Foundation, which he is looking to renew at a higher level to build on the 10,000 Microscopes project. He couldnt be happier with the results; within two to three weeks earlier this spring, people from 130 countries signed up. Applicants merely had to propose how they would use the tool and how it would work within their community. Concurrently, the team is conducting field trials in India, Ghana, Uganda and elsewhere in Africa. I was astounded by how diverse the people and their projects are, he says. A Mongolian farmer wants to identify pathogens in camel milk. There is a broad range of ideas from people who are passionate about the context off the tool. Prakash is putting the proposals into book form to bring cultural context to the project as well as providing a repository of ideas. The project proves how versatile the tool can be, he notes. Although the initial applications are in front-line health care in developing areas, Prakash sees potential for environmental monitoring of various pollutants, among other subjects. To take development to the next level, Prakash is looking for about $1 million over the next three to four years. Demand certainly seems to be there. Prakash says he has been approached by a government representative from Singapore where officials want to put a Foldscope into the hands of every student. There are a lot mechanics in how this is built. By the act of human folding, you can get a really precise optical alignment, out of origami.Prof. Manu Prakash, Stanford University

Job Search Tips Based on Product Management Principles

Job Search Tips Based on Product Management Principles Job Search Tips Based on Product Management Principles In many companies, including those that produce technology and consumer products, a product manager  is responsible for identifying new product opportunities and creating a roadmap for product creation and delivery. In advance of launching the next generation smartphone or gaming device, product managers spend months assessing the features of competitors’ products, understanding the most up-to-date technologies and identifying the features they want to include in the new product. The goal is to design and launch a product that is different and better than current offerings so that it can compete in the market. As a job seeker you are a “product” competing in the job market, and you must prove that you are different and better than other candidates. Here are some core product management practices to help you enhance your job search and position yourself as the best candidate. A/B Test When product managers make improvements to a product, they typically come up with a series of educated guesses about what is causing a problem or what changes could improve the product. In order to determine whether a single element is the root cause of a problem or a point of opportunity, they often run an A/B test. They create two groups that are identical in every way except for a lone attribute. They run the test and then compare the results. If the outcomes are significantly different, they can conclude that the cause of the difference is that single attribute. They can then base decisions on this newfound knowledge.   It’s a good idea to test as you tweak your resume or any other element of your job search process, from the types of roles you are applying for to the different channels for submitting your resume and even the outfits you wear on interviews. Note the differences in your efforts and keep records of the respective differences in outcomes to determine the best methods for job search success. For example, create several versions of your resume and note which version results in more interest from recruiters. Use this version or continue to make controlled adjustments until you have the best representation of your talents as a candidate. Quantitative research   Related to A/B testing is the need to collect and analyze data. An important first step is to consider the metrics that matter to you. At Simply Hired, our product team looks deeply at feature and product upgrades that help job seekers find the right jobs quickly and easily. They track progress towards this aim via metrics such as return visits and increasing click-through rates. Ultimately your goal is to find a great new job. As you go through the process, ask yourself, “What are the metrics that confirm that I am headed in the right direction?” They are likely emails or phone calls from recruiters in response to resumes that you have submitted as well as phone screens and interviews with your desired employer. Track the outcomes of each of your efforts noting variations as if you are running A/B tests to identify and repeat the things that are working best for you. Sample of a spreadsheet to use for tracking information: Qualitative research Where quantitative research entails collecting a large volume of information for analysis, qualitative research entails getting deep insights, typically from customers through interviews. Without hearing directly from customers, you run the risk of misunderstanding data or inaccurately assigning causation. Conducting interviews and allowing customers to speak for themselves offers useful information to complement and enhance insights from data. In addition to noting the success rates of your job search activities, seek out feedback from friends or professional contacts to better understand ways that you can improve your “product.” Ask others to critique your resume. Participate in mock interviews  and ask for explicit feedback on your verbal responses and physical presence. While it may feel embarrassing or humbling to ask for this assistance, ultimately it will yield helpful suggestions that you may not have considered and that can help you improve your performance when it counts. Competitive Analysis When designing new products, product managers consider the competitive landscape  into which a product will enter. They think about competitors and their products, the positioning of the products to customers and the pricing. Having this context allows the product manager to determine what product they should create and how it may perform when launched. Having this information also helps the product manager eliminate ideas for products that would not do well if launched, thus sparing the company the time and resources involved in product development. As a job seeker, you do not exist in a vacuum. For any job that you are pursuing, there are other candidates who are also interested in and possibly qualified for the position. You should perform competitive analysis such as checking out LinkedIn profiles or talking to peers at industry events to understand how others are positioning themselves. Doing so can help you figure out how to best communicate your suitability as a candidate. It can also help you identify areas of improvement and give insight into the roles or industries where you may struggle to be successful. For example, data scientists often have technical or quantitative backgrounds and advanced degrees. This is not to say that you should not pursue this type of role if your background does not fit exactly, but knowing this gives you some insight into how you may compete against other candidates and may be a reason to consider other types of opportunities as well. Prioritization Once sufficient data has been gathered, it is the product manager’s job to decide which projects should be prioritized ahead of others. With limited time and resources, a company must make tradeoffs and pursue projects with high potential impact and reasonable cost of implementation. As a job seeker, you also have limited resources- mainly time. After you have brainstormed and gathered some insights on activities that might improve your success as a candidate, try to assess the relative impact of each activity as well as the level of difficulty in accomplishing each task. For example, sending emails to college alumni working in your desired field to set up informational interviews is a low-cost, high-impact activity. Getting a graduate degree that is common in a field you want to enter is also something that can have a positive impact; however, this is something that will take time to accomplish and has higher cost and therefore risk. It may be something you put in your longer term plans for “product development,” but it is not likely something you can finish quickly. Daniel Brakin, a Simply Hired product director, points out that there is always an opportunity cost  to the projects you take on. “By doing one thing, you won’t be able to do another. Make sure the thing you’re doing is most likely to help you succeed. Simply Hired Product Manager Priscilla Wong points out that in addition to finding new product areas in which to compete, it is important for companies to look inward and be cognizant of the performance of their current products. Shifts in the industry and the introduction of new competitors can make your products or your competitive edge obsolete. As a candidate, be mindful of changes in your line of work, and be critical of your strengths so that you don’t find yourself falling behind the pack. Taking classes or seminars or reading about developments within your industry can help you maintain the competitiveness of your current “product.”
